We arrived at 8.30 and the car park had just a few cars in it. We used the car park overlooked by Bunster Hill (SK 14670 50851), which is not free but close to the start of the walk. By 2.00pm it was full, with a queue to get in. There are several parking areas around and the walk can be accessed from different directions.

The day we went it was raining of and on and did spoil the walk a little. Overall it is a fantastic walk and not too long or difficult. The walk along the side of the river is just delightful, especially if not many people are about.

There are lots of routes to take away from the dale if you wish, because of the wet weather we decided not to venture up onto the higher ground.

Along the river are many weirs and high rocks (Tissington Spires or Ilam Rock for example to admire or photograph). Also along the river you will see lots of wildlife and fauna, look out for Dippers feeding at the weirs. If you’re a photographer you will struggle to make headway there is so much to take in.

For the most part the walk is a gentle stroll with a short section that rises and falls, but not difficult.

Lots of people stop at the caves, so you will be lucky to have the spot to yourself, however you can still enjoy it. The views of the river are great.

We shall return and explore further.
